Frequently Asked Questions
Can I teach myself to sew?
Absolutely! Once you have mastered a few basic skills you will find that you can sew a really wide range of things. The most important thing to start sewing is a good sewing machine, hand-sewing just isn’t the same! While sewing machines are expensive they generally last a really long time and you can always get one second-hand through sites like eBay. If you have just got a machine, here is a good place to start.
What is the best sewing machine?
The best sewing machine depends completely on what exactly you want it for and what your budget is. But in general, go for brands like Brother, Singer, Janome and PFAFF – these are all trusted brands that should offer some level of warranty on your machine just in case anything goes wrong. I have had my PFAFF Hobby 1132 for 10 years and have never had an issue with it. Make sure that any machine you buy can at least sew a straight and a zig-zag stitch (most will) as this way you can easily sew on both woven and knit fabrics.
What's the easiest thing to sew for beginners?
Start small with something like a scrunchie, there are loads of tutorials on youtube and it only really involves sewing one straight seam but is a good way to get used to a sewing machine. If you want to make clothes, I would recommend starting sewing with woven fabrics instead of knits. This is because stretchy fabric (knit) is more difficult to learn on and can involve more complicated stitches. So while you may think something like a t-shirt will be the easiest place to start I would opt for something more like a skirt or dress from woven fabric. The Babydoll Dress is a great pattern if you are new to sewing. Patterns will help guide you through each step so that it is less daunting.
Where can I find trendy sewing patterns?
Right Side Patterns on Etsy! The goal of Right Side Patterns was to make sewing patterns that were trendy, affordable and accessible. All patterns are PDF downloads meaning you can print them at home and tape them together. After purchase, you will be able to access the pattern PDF as well as the instructions PDF which will guide you step by step through the process to make the garment. We are always adding to the list of new patterns that we want to make so if you have any requests just drop us a message.
What are the best sewing patterns for beginners?
We try and make all of our patterns accessible for beginners and will say in the description of the pattern if there is anything particularly difficult about it or whether it needs any specific skills. Check out all of our patterns here, and if you are worried about your skill level at all just send us a message and we can help you out. If you find videos more helpful than written instructions then I would recommend both the Puff Sleeve Top and the High Waist Pants for which you can find YouTube tutorials on LizNorris’ channel.
Should I get a serger / overlocker?
You might be wondering what is the difference between a serger and a sewing machine? Well a serger (also called an overlocker) is great for sewing with knits as it allows stretch and it also is perfect for finishing edges. A serger has a little blade that cuts the edge of your fabric and then binds it with thread at the same time. This means your fabric won’t fray and it looks professional and neat. If you are new to sewing, you don’t need a serger. But if you have been sewing for a little while and think you will stick with it, or really like sewing stretchy material then they are a great investment. I have a Brother Overlocker and I love it! Here is a link to the one I have on Amazon (this is an Amazon Affiliate link but all opinions are my own!)
